How do heat pumps work with underfloor heating?
A heat pump brings in warm air from outside, and uses this heat to warm up the water that then runs around your underfloor heating system. The water heats up the concrete slabs that surround the water pipes, and these concrete slabs release the energy into your home.
Underfloor heating heats a room from floor to ceiling, which gives you a more consistent and comfortable feeling than you’d get with a radiator which creates hot and cold spots in a room.
A common misconception about underfloor heating is that you’ll get a warm floor. However, you shouldn’t expect this – well-designed underfloor heating will take the chill off your flooring but shouldn’t result in a “hot” floor.
Does a heat pump get warm enough for underfloor heating?
Absolutely, yes! Underfloor heating runs at a lower temperature than radiators while creating the same overall level of warmth. Combining underfloor heating with a heat pump means you can run your heat pump at a lower temperature than if you were using radiators. Because heat pumps operate more efficiently at a lower temperature, this means an overall more efficient system – reducing your energy usage and saving you money.
Can the same person install underfloor heating and a heat pump?
At Tom Plumb, we regularly install underfloor heating and air source heat pumps – it’s exactly the kind of project we like to get stuck into. As well as installing your heat pump and underfloor heating, we can advise you on the best heat pumps and underfloor heating system for your circumstances and can also teach you how to use your new heating controls, so you get the most out of your new investment.
