One of the really common concerns about installing heat pumps is how much noise they make. After all, no one wants to endure a noisy machine outside their home or make themselves unpopular with their neighbours thanks to a noisy bit of kit running day and night.
So, are heat pumps noisy? The simple answer is ‘not really’. Older heat pumps were on the noisier side, which has given them a bad name. But the newer heat pumps are much more unobtrusive. They’re far quieter than the kind of noise you get with a gas boiler, which most of us have learnt to ignore.
What is the quietest heat pump?
Even with this reassurance, you might still be concerned about the noise levels you’ll get with a heat pump. In this case, it’s good to know that different models make different levels of noise.
There are two kinds of heat pumps available. Those that focus on heating, and those that offer heating and air conditioning. The newer heating-focused heat pumps are far quieter than those that provide air conditioning as well. So, if you’re particularly concerned about noise – perhaps you’re a sensitive sleeper or will need to install your heat pump in close proximity to your neighbour’s property, then a heating-focused heat pump will be your best bet.
